Final thoughts

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

Coming to the end of this project feels like coming to the end of a journey. A short journey but one in which I learnt so much.

Having spoken to a number of experts, charities and trichsters, it is clear that funding more neurological research will only happen in time as soon as this disorder moves higher up in the agenda. The resources are there and we have all the technology we need but taking into consideration the impact this pandemic has had on the economy it might delay the process.

This project has endeavoured to deeply explore the need for more money to invest into neurologic research, the lack of information that there is around it as well as treatment available leaves it open for debate as further studies still need to be done into it. Perhaps, future journalistic exploits may benefit from exploring the neuroscience behind it deeper and if the methods that have been used so far can be approached differently.

Although I have learned a lot about trichotillomania through navigating the different approaches to the issue, as of yet, there appears to be no definitive answer as to when the change will come.

We live in a digital age where anything is possible. With a lot of taboo subjects being normalised, mental health and equality are starting to become one of the most important features for us as a society. This is why now it’s the best time to discuss more about the future of mental disorders.
