Why choose to do my idea about trichotillomania

The initial idea for my major multimedia project was to explore and raise awareness on trichotillomania, which is a mental disorder where you pull your hair. This idea came to me after I have seen a BBC short documentary I have come across while scrolling on my Instagram feed in August last summer. It was about a girl who had TTM and was getting a surgery that would help grow her hair back. It was the first time I heard about it, so it immediately got me curious.

Then I spent some time researching more into this subject and that helped me to find out the gap. No one certainly knows what is going on in the brains of people who pull that triggers the urges to do the action because they do it unconsciously. This is why I adopted this angle as my main one.

I have found that a lot of work has been done online in terms of medical journals researching on the topic and helpful websites, but they were all coming to the same conclusion – that more neurological research should be done into it and the lack of funding for it.

Moreover, I could not find any radio documentaries about this disorder. Instead, I found a brief of a podcast called ‘’Can humans change’’ which was posted on BBC Radio 4’s website which was more appropriate for the style, audience and subject I aimed to adopt with mine. Thus, I would use this podcast’s brief as my target audience and station in my pitch.

In terms of interviews I would like to talk to a person who is either still pulling or is pull-free, a hair salon helping people with trich and a neurologist.
